Do any of you authors have the ability to unshare a comment?

Kinja'd!!!

I can "dismiss" but not unshare. And I can't even select to unshare comments on other blogs where I am only an author (as opposed to moderator status which I have here).

ETA: For Kinja Help Tag / Documentation

It seems very odd, as a test, I "dismissed" a comment through this option, which was shared from within Oppo, and it dismissed the comment in the original thread as well as removing the share.

So what will happen if I "dismiss" the share from the front page? And why is the dismiss option tied to unsharing a comment?

ETA2: It's there for some shared comments, but not others.

Kinja'd!!!

ETA3: It seems that only moderators can unshare some comments (in my testing), and others, it seems no one (except maybe other than the sharer?) can unshare . Such as the one pictured at the top of the page, I cannot unshare it from oppo).

Hey there, I'm the 'owner' of Hackerspace (or supreme commander). Kinja really complicated and I'm not quite sure myself about the differences between functions. Do you know the difference between dismissing and unsharing? It's like the upcoming return of approved comments: do we verify by recommending or following on behalf of the blog? According to Gawker a Media users trusted by the blog (or it's admins) can trust other users but they can't follow on the blogs behalf...

Hi Ed! There are a lot of active changes occurring and I wanted to see if any of you had seen any of these things. The dismiss function actually works as a "dismiss" if you are a moderator where the original post came from. Unsharing still unshares, when it's available, which does not appear to be all of the time, *and* looks to be tied to other permissions.

There are certain posts that I cannot unshare from Oppo currently. These are posts which came from front pages.

The approved comments can be dealt with for all comments going forward by following, or to just recommend if you only want the one comment out of the grey/pending area. Just like last time (so far).

Your understanding of the front page behavior is correct as best as I can tell.

(I added you as an author here, just in case you ever want it, if you don't and it just clutters your menu, let me know and I'll remove it).

I can still unshare posts from Oppo (haven't found a shared comment), and I can still unshare both posts and comments from the ODeck - but I have to click the comment - after it takes me to the post page with the comment the unshare option appears in the dropdown.

I feel like this might be a good thing/I'm pretty sure it's what the GT mods were asking for 'cause we have a couple of posters who are unshare happy and it's spawned multiple call out posts and the like.

And is the person who shared the unsharable comments a mod? I feel like something like that should block someone else from unsharing.

Thanks for the authorship, I did 'apply' when oppo was new but it never happened. I can see you're already an author of hs :)

(sorry, busy day at work, but I didn't see anyone else address it, my explanations may have been a bit piecemeal)

And PROVING my point, this a different topic than what I was thinking. THIS post is confusing as HELL. Sorry. Will retest and see.

Kinja'd!!! Gamecat235 > Ernie @ Kinja
08/18/2014 at 17:18

OK. The behavior over the weekend was that for a couple of hours, no one could unshare materials other than the original posters if they came from an environment where you did not have admin rights (for instance, I could unshare from a comment on Oppo which was shared to oppo, but I couldn't unshare a comment from Jalopnik which was shared to Oppo).

At some point this behavior stopped occurring and with the exception of the only remaining vestige of this change, everything seems to have returned to normal. The remaining vestige is the dismiss option in the dropdown menu, which is quite odd.

(I think that makes MUCH more sense).

I'm confused as well.

Basically, unsharing stopped working for most people for a period of time on Saturday except for some very specific, permission based exceptions. At the same time the "dismiss" option was also introduced to the dropdown off of the triangle for shared comments when you have admin permissions on the blog that the comment was shared to.

At some point after this was noticed, the issue appears to have been resolved, with the exception of the "dismiss" option still being present. (which, as I discovered, actually functions as a dismiss, not an unshare).

I... had two clear approaches to this.

1. treat this as an actual, legitimate sentiment and adopt a nuke from orbit approach...

or

2. assume that this was a joke and move forward with the assumption that it was just in poor taste.

If I erred in caution, I still maintain the right to nuke from orbit (as, I am imagining, you do too, but with a much more effective weapon, which I also imagine you don't use lightly or without very good reason).

Don't think I didn't debate the dismiss option very heavily.

Anti-semitism (and any racist sentiment for that matter) is not to be taken lightly, especially on the internet where everything is final and there are no take backs. I would like to know 1. if sugarhill is joking, and if not, 2. why that conclusion was reached.

Oh I'm really sorry, it literally didn't even occur to me that you would think I was serious.

I was having trouble with kinja. I'm Jewish. Blaming things that seem to only happen to me on anti semitism is a pretty standard joke (albeit not a very original one). I see gamecat took it as I intended, but if you have any doubt at all that others will, please just dismiss the entire thread. The bug was fixed and I have no desire to make you uncomfortable.

You're great. I wasn't kidding when I told Denton to give you a raise. Sorry about this.

I was completely joking and wouldn't even really have labeled it poor taste just...a tired joke (Holocaust survivor granddaughter, it's a thing). Ernie's salt of the earth. I'm not a known entity here though so I get how it could maybe read that way - I forgot where I was. Please dismiss it if you think anyone could possibly take it seriously (by your initial response I assumed you took it in the way I intended so I forgot about it until Ernie just commented).

Kinja'd!!! Gamecat235 > Ernie @ Kinja
08/18/2014 at 18:13

Kinja'd!!!1

I saw this and thought about the approaches I could take.

Very few of them ended well, and in truth, I took the weakest way out (which is embarrassing to admit to be honest). I also was hoping for an admission of joking, but it never seemed to come. I like sugarhill's interactions on other blogs, so I was willing to provide for the benefit of the doubt (no one is perfect, but racism has NO place in civil conversation or civil society).

I found it to be so unlikely that this could be a sincerely held belief because:

1. EVERYBODY I know on here loves you.

2. see number 1.

3. I have never seen a single racially motivated comment from you in any communications I have ever been privy to. Not one. Ever.

So, on my part, I would like to apologize to you for not addressing it and calling it out for what it was, because I failed there. And I am sorry.

(I do generally believe that ignoring racism is condoning it... damn it.)

As a descendant of Jewish heritage who does not identify with Judaism, but does absolutely adhere to humanist principles, and who has relatives (aunts, uncles, great uncles, etc) who were lost in the Holocaust I understand the family usage of the term, but also do not want to have the stigma of allowing anything which resembles racism to be acceptable. Regardless of direction.

I had sincerely hoped it was a joke, based on many interactions with you. Thank you for the explanation.
